This section deals with a specific circumstance, that being a traffic stop involving a driver who might be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It is important to learn the terms and phrases in this section as it will be twice as hard to communicate with an intoxicated individual compared to a sober person. Make sure to refer back to the traffic stops and drugs/alcohol sections for more questions and phrases.

What's the Problem?

This list of questions will help you determine the reason for your subject's behavior.

¿Sabe lo que hizo? (SAH-beh LOH KEH EE-soh) - Do you know what you did?

¿Por qué estaba zigzagueando? (POHR KEH eh-STAH-bah seeg-sah-geh-AHN-doh) - Why were you swerving?

¿Sabe dónde está? (SAH-beh DOHN-deh eh-STAH) - Do you know where you are?

¿Adónde va? (ah-DOHN-deh VAH) - Where are you going?

¿De dónde viene? (DEH DOHN-deh vee-EH-neh) - Where are you coming from?

¿Ha estado tomando alcohol? (AH eh-STAH-doh toh-MAHN-doh ahl-koh-HOHL) - Have you been drinking alcohol?

¿Cuánto tiempo hace? (KWAHN-toh tee-EHM-poh AH-seh) - How long ago?

¿Qué tomó? (KEH toh-MOH) - What did you drink?

¿Qué tipo de alcohol? (KEH TEE-poh DEH ahl-koh-HOHL) - What kind of alcohol?

¿Cuánto tomó? (KWAHN-toh toh-MOH) - How much did you drink?

¿Cuándo empezó a tomar? (KWAHN-doh ehm-peh-SOH AH toh-MAHR) - When did you start drinking?

¿Cuándo terminó a tomar? (KWAHN-doh tehr-mee-NOH AH toh-MAHR) - When did you stop drinking?

¿Cuánto ha dormido? (KWAHN-toh AH dohr-MEE-doh) - How much have you slept?

¿Tiene diabetes? (tee-EH-neh dee-ah-BEH-tehs) - Do you have diabetes?

¿Tiene problemas físicos? (tee-EH-neh proh-BLEH-mahs FEE-see-kohs) - Do you have physical problems?

¿Hay algo mal con su carro? (AH-ee AHL-goh MAHL KOHN SOO KAH-rroh) - Is there something wrong with your car?

¿Tomó medicina? (toh-MOH meh-dee-SEE-nah) - Did you take medication?

¿Tomó drogas? (toh-MOH DROH-gahs) - Did you take drugs?

¿Está borracho? (eh-STAH boh-RRAH-choh) - Are you drunk?

¿Qué tiene en la botella? (KEH tee-EH-neh EHN LAH boh-TEH-yah) - What do you have in the bottle?

¿Qué tiene en la lata? (KEH tee-EH-neh EHN LAH LAH-tah) - What do you have in the can?

¿Qué tiene en la bolsa? (KEH tee-EH-neh EHN LAH BOHL-sah) - What do you have in the bag?

¿Qué tiene en su bolsillo? (KEH tee-EH-neh EHN SOO bohl-SEE-yoh) - What do you have in your pocket?

¿Qué tiene debajo del asiento? (KEH tee-EH-neh deh-BAH-hoh DEHL ah-see-EHN-toh) - What do you have under the seat?

Time for the Tests

To determine whether or not a subject is intoxicated, certain tests must be conducted. This section will help you explain how to complete the tests that are to be given.

Salgo del carro (SAHL-goh DEHL KAH-rroh) - Get out of the car

Voy a darle un examen (VOH-ee AH DAHR-leh OON ehk-SAH-mehn) - I am going to give you a test

Voy a darle un examen de aliento (VOH-ee AH DAHR-leh OON ehk-SAH-mehn DEH ah-lee-EHN-toh) - I am going to give you a breath test

Tiene que respirar profundo (tee-EH-neh KEH rehs-pee-RAHR proh-FOON-doh) - You have to breathe deep

Voy a darle un examen de sangre (VOH-ee AH DAHR-leh OON ehk-SAH-mehn DEH SAHN-greh) - I am going to give you a blood test

Voy a darle un examen de orina (VOH-ee AH DAHR-leh OON ehk-SAH-mehn DEH oh-REE-nah) - I am going to give you a urine test

La orina va en este vaso (LAH oh-REE-nah VAH EHN EHS-teh VAH-soh) - The urine goes in this cup

Si rehusa tomar el examen podría perder su licencia (SEE reh-OO-sah toh-MAHR EHL ehk-SAH-mehn poh-DREE-ah pehr-DEHR SOO lee-SEHN-see-ah) - If you refuse to take the test, you may lose your license

The Final Decision

After you have conducted your tests and determined whether or not the subject is in violation of any laws, you can inform him of what is going to happen now.
